Introduction to Amateur Radio

Amateur radio is not only a popular hobby, but it is also a service used for emergency communications. With a modest HF transceiver, an FCC licensed operator can talk across town and around the world to other operators. No cellular access is needed.

Amateurs can also talk to others via satellites and even communicate with astronauts onboard the International Space Station through the Amateur Radios in Space program.

Amateur Radios range in size from pocket-size to desktop models. Modern Amateur Radio equipment either operates or charged by a 12 Volt source. For this reason, amateur radios are ideal for emergencies. Even when the power is out, there is a 12-volt source in just about every vehicle.
